Is the 2022 Ford Maverick compact pick-up truck farm tough or is it meant for those living in a subdivision? Ray Bohacz, the Hot Rod Farmer, puts both a hybrid and EcoBoost version to the test on the family farm for two weeks so that you can find out.
Great commentary on this vehicle.
Question for you. What do you think the challenge Ford has in offering an AWD version of the hybrid model in lieu of front wheel drive only?
Dear Sir,
Thank you so much listening to the episode and the kind words.
The Maverick architecture has DNA from the Escape and Bronco Sport but is highly modified to make it a true truck. The Escape AWD Hybrid uses a drive shaft from a second electric motor (almost like a transfer case) to the rear wheels. The Maverick cannot do that but will need a separate rear mounted electric motor to make it an AWD hybrid.
According to Ford’s chief engineer on the project, that is in the works but it may wait for a refresh on the vehicle… and then again it may come sooner.
As I stated in the podcast, for the most part you really do not need AWD with the FWD but I guess you can’t have a Subaru owner believe that!
My personal take is there will be an AWD version of the Maverick but it will most likely not be for a few model years. Please keep in mind that the electric motor and CVT the Maverick is using is much beefier than one that would be used in a passenger car and thus, is harder to package.
